Woven & Wound
Products of Vietnam
HISTORY
|
Vietnam has a 4,000
year old history of weaving products. Made from bamboo, rattan, other
field grasses, sea grass, fern and palm leaves, these products are
still made by many households and find many daily uses.
More recently, these products
have been made for the export market in factories using some modern
mass-manufacturing techniques. Even in factory production,
individual weavers weave one product at a time from start to
completion. The concession made to mass-manufacturing is
to have on hand a ready supply of raw materials.
Many household articles are well
known and distinctive. Some items have been made for the western
markets. Woven products are quite diversified, with most articles made
from rattan or various species of bamboo. Each is decorated in a
simple but beautiful pattern. Some are for daily or decorative
use, while others are for ritual or labor.
Whether baskets, mats, hats,
platters, boxes, decorative pieces, or wall hangings, these beautiful
products will, with minimal care, last for decades and beyond.
The products shown here are made
by skilled crafts people who are hard at work keeping their skills
alive and passing them on to succeeding generations. The
production quality is high but not to the same, labor-intensive,
time-consuming level as demonstrated in tribal basket weaving.
Ideal for gifts or personal
use, these fine handicraft products will only increase in value
as the modern world keeps turning to plastics.
Wound and woven products of
Vietnam come in various forms, yet each reveals the following
distinctive characteristics:
- Unique breakthroughs in form,
curve and sculpture
- Unique application of
decorative patterns
- Unique colors and use of
colored leaves, woods and fabrics
- A distinctly Vietnamese
esthetic element of overall design and function.
We feature only the top
craftspeople from the leading factories in Ho Chi Minh City.
