Discovery
of jade, both ultra-hard jadeite (second only to diamonds) and softer nephrite, deepened people's understanding of stones. Qualities were
different, such as hardness, mellow color, soft feel, and pleasant sound, each
of which were standards used to gauge the beauty of stones. Jade met all these
standards. It soon came to pass
that people judged the degrees of beauty of all stones by those
qualities found in jade. Jade, because of its fine quality, was first used in sorcery and ancestral sacrifice. Gradually, people began to believe that jade had divine and supernatural forces. People also believed that these forces would multiply when jade was made into wares and ornamental pieces of various shapes. Now, jade is sought for its beauty & value.

When
people linked human virtues to pure jade, they elevated its value. While they
admired jade's beauty, they also played up the stone's fine material qualities.
For
a long time, the carving of jade articles has been an intrinsic part of Asian
culture, one reason that Asian jade is renowned throughout world. The most
skilled craftsman can make the best use of the natural color and the shape of
the raw material. The most complex, and some might say the best, jade sculptures were believed to be those carved in
the Qing Dynasty ( 1644-1911)
Jade
had been cherished as a symbol of many virtues. Its hardness suggests firmness
and loyalty, and its luster projects purity and beauty.
Jade
appears in nature in great variety. The majority of jade is used to make
articles and objects, with a very small amount of the best jade being set aside
for jewel manufacture. Nephrite is the
traditional favorite jade type of artisans.
Jade
is considered by
to be the most precious of stones, although many other precious and
semi-precious hard stones are carved by jade carvers. Nephrite jade is prized
for the oily luster it takes on when polished. The most precious form of
nephrite jade is the white jade known as "mutton fat."
Another
type of Jade is
jadeite which is even tougher than nephrite and became popular in the 18th
century. Both nephrite and jadeite come in a variety of colors although jadeite
has more vivid shades of green, red and purple. All types of jade are very
difficult to carve and require master carvers. Mechanical tools (foot powered
before electricity), have always been used. Still, a complex piece may take several
months to complete.
