These first offerings are finely carved and decorated. They are crafted in wood, specially treated, lacquered, and then layered with silver, gold, and vermilion leaf. They are traditional cottage industry crafts. The skills to produce them have been handed down from within the family from the ancient past.
There are many stages for the development of these works of art, such as gathering the proper wood, selecting the proper piece, carving to fit the character of the wood, treating the finished wood in preparation for the final artwork of ancient lacquering and leafing. The aging and finishing process is unique. Many pieces look to be centuries old. Some appear to be cast metal. All are modern works of wood that are sculptured and finished in traditional style. Each took months of work and processing to complete.
WHY PURCHASE REPRODUCTIONS? The long and rich history of Vietnam is more than 4,000 years old. It's written history is more than 2,000 years long. Often ruled and dominated by other nations, Vietnam is a rich compellation of vast majority of Kahn people, 54 minority ethnic tribes, as well as the culture of its former rulers.
The items found in Vietnam include truly ancient objects. Their beauty is often simple, sometimes complex, and always lasting. The ancient objects are Cham or Khmer in form, style and substance. Religious in origin, they come from temples and shrines, often buried for centuries. They are simply stupendous to see, indescribable to hold, and unbelievable to own. They are also completely illegal to export.
Antique items, those from 100 to 400 years old, are Vietnamese, Chinese and French in form, style and substance. Usually decorative in origin, many are huge in proportion and came from great palaces or private homes. These are often complex in design and also completely illegal to export.
Old items that are not yet antique are mostly Vietnamese in form, style and substance. Most are religious in origin and came from temples that have been modernized to appeal to the current tastes and styles of the dynamic people of Vietnam. These too are completely illegal to export.
The traditional Vietnamese sculpture offered here is a handicraft art that looks old and often even appears to be ancient. Each piece is purely Vietnamese in form, style, and substance, and is fully legal to export.
